Dystopian Wars - Painting Update, Prussian Bombers and Empire of the Blazing Sun WIP

Just a quick update on the Dystopian wars progress, the Prussian fleet is now finished and the Empire of the Blazing sun are coming along. I still can't quite decide how to incorporate the blazing sun imagery or accent red, somewhere between just a small free hand flag or blazing sun beams across the entire hull.

Full pictures of the fleets will be done when I have a decent lighting set up, for now some quite peeks of the fleets that should soon be available for purchase

Bases have been magnetized and I have staggered the heights to give the squadron a little more interest.

Nakatsu Class Cruisers. 3 Cruisers looking for 4th, for fun, friendship and maybe war!

Uwatsu Class Frigates.

Sokotsu Class Battleship - Another small conversion with the extended barrels of the fore turret (just for visual balance, because I'm a tart like that).

Dystopian Wars - Prussian Geier Class Bomber Conversion WIP

Here is a quick scrappy look at the work in progress with the Prussian bombers from the box set. The propellers provided were very quickly discarded when I got these models. They can be rather wonky and delicate, I also wasn't keen on them aesthetically. They work well for many of the Dystopian models, but just not these. Perhaps if they had been iron cross propellers it would have been genius, but that's another idea. Meanwhile, to finish the models here and now I grabbed some 40k imperial guard flamer arms and created what might be described as an exhaust/vent/steam/jet engine piece (logic need not apply here, the model seems to remain airborne best not to argue how it actual does).

Drilling and pinning the pieces is a delicate procedure. (Note the angled section under the flamer piece pin, this matchs the angles on the bombers wing) \o/

The ever present smidgen of green stuff provides a robust and solid fit.

The air support 80% painted, shading and markings to come.

It is a more industrial look, and I like it. Will have to save flamers for any bombers added to my command.

Dystopian Wars Prussian Fleet

As I have been systematically completing and painting all models buried in my collection I have inevitably uncovered my Dystopian Wars fleets. Both a Prussian and an Empire of the Blazing Sun boxed set were purchased at the release of the game, however the game never caught the deserved attention. This was due mostly to the poorly formatted and ambiguous rule book I think. While the rules still continue to be ironed out and clarified (iteration 1.1 of the rule book still has numerous errata and omissions) the fantastic model range and additional nations has ceaselessly grown. Spartan games have fleshed out a fantastic alternative steampunk universe with hugely characterful and aesthetically varied factions. The rules hurdle for this relatively complex strategic game can perhaps be alleviated for anyone with the strong and dedicated forum community on the Spartan Games site. So as I am drawn back to this game system I set about finishing the models I currently own.

Starting with my favourite, the Prussian Empire.

I chose a colour scheme that echoed the pseudo WWII atmosphere of the game, in this case, dark gray/green. I kept most of the model very business like metal and brass and added the accent colours of the Prussian flag in a flash down the hull (this is angled in line with the funnels). I am more than happy with how the scheme worked out and hope to add other Prussian ships from the range given the change. As well as a possible commission painting service at this standard.

The bases are plasticard and have been coated with tinted water effect after painting (the white wave crests or my sculpted bow wakes were painted last).

The fleet as a whole, the spare frigate is on point.

The magnetized turrets of the Battleship are converted with Plasticard tubing.
Though a little OTT the larger barrels are suitably imposing.

Reiver Class Cruisers

The air support from the box set are also near completion with a small conversion to the bombers that I should be posting soon.

Deathwing Terminator Command Squad meets Black Reach spares WIP

With the new Dark Angel book recently released I thought it might be a good time to unleash the eleven or so Assault on Black Reach Terminator models I still had buried in my bits boxes.

I do suspect there is an abundance of these discarded models out there just ready and waiting to find a new home as Deathwing squads. However the basic models from Assault on Black Reach are very limited with their default armament and pose, so we come to the second part of the equation. The all new Deathwing Terminator Command Squad box set, like most new Games Workshop releases this box includes a bare minimum of complete models and a vast array of optional components and variants. In most cases this is an pricey way of selling any specific unit with a host of extras you may not have any need or preference for over extra models. But in this case the shear array of weapons and arm variants available could potentially enhance up to 20 models.

So, when many spare parts meet many spare models, feasting and merriment can be enjoyed by all!

Command Squad/Knight Sprues, Black Reach Spares, some High Elf wing/feather ornamentations.

Foot pegs and pins, keeping bases separate for terrain textures and effects.

Several stages of landscaping, from cork to sand and Vallejo Dark Earth paste (top left).

Pegged models propped in bases for handling and some of the many arms to be magnetized.

Spare power fists glued to this plastic strip for testing possible marbled effect.

Quick marbled test proved to be over ambitious and would only be done justice with far more time and diligence.

So on with the classic bone white armour. The inital base coat of Wargames Foundry "Drab Light" is drybrushed with "Boneyard" .
A 3-1 watered down wash of GW Agrax Earhshade smooths out the drybrush and adds some depth.

Blended Highlights and crisp edging with "Boneyard Light".
These blended highlights have been done with a simple two brush technique, that I have been increasingly leaning towards.

1). With your first brush, apply thinned paint to the edge/section being highlighted (3-4 parts water, this may vary even greater depending on the strength of the pigment involved or highlight required).

2). Using your second brush, which is clean and dry, use it to feather away the darker/inside edge of the applied paint (as if you were trying to lightly clean off the applied paint while dragging it across the armour plate or section being highlighted) .

The knack is in both the consistency of the paint used and the timing of the feathering. If you immediately apply the second brush, too much of the paint may be removed (this would be perfect if you wanted to apply this is a couple of coats for some super smooth blending). I found that applying the thinned paint on two or three edges then returning to the first edge allowed enough time for the first to be drying. These highlights were then edged with the side of the brush as I worked over the rest of the model.

I can not normally explain the painting involved very well, but hopefully this makes some sense.

Basing close up with the Vallejo Dark Earth paste and an ink/water effect mix for a rugged muddy wartorn landscape.

This month I am offering a pretty substantial discount on Zombicide commissions. I normally charge £235 to have the base game painted up to a "high gaming standard" but for April this has been reduced to a whopping £150! P&P is not included, but I do ship worldwide.

Any extra Zombicide models (Kickstarter abomination sets etc) are also discounted:

If anyone is interested in this offer please contact me via email: theminikingdom@gmail.com to discuss it further. :)

First come, first served! As I'll only be able to take on a limited number of these commissions.

For more examples of the Zombicide models I've painted take a look these previous Zombicide posts and this cool video, made by one of my clients.

BEASTMEN - Gor, Ungor, Rogues Gallery

Well, thats it for now with Beastmen. Glad to have everything I have completed. It can be stored away for now, perhaps untill a new book some time in the future.

Another Battleforce box, some Shaman, Harpies, Chariots, we might have an army.

The twenty Raiders are usually split into fives with two ambush units.

A matching pair of axes is where its at.
